In Diana’s Words
“This was my way of exploring the end of my first important romantic relationship. The way in which the perception of the time together, on both sides, warped and changed as dependent on the feelings in the current moment. The experience for me was a catalyst for looking at how time affects both who we are in relationships and how we process their ending. The photograph of the two face to face is overlaid with a song written by Reuel that includes audio from a moment grabbed from that past relationship. I kept being struck by how, over time, even the sharpest memories degrade and become distorted, but our recall of events is greatly influenced by our feelings around the events but also our feelings about ourselves.
The me in that relationship is not the me now, nor the me that will exist in another 5 years. In this piece especially, the AI is an absolutely integral part of capturing that gradual change of emotions through its collective information used to reimagine the original image that I photographed. Reuel created a similar program himself, writing a song for the beginning and final image in the 52-part series, then having his code create songs that morph from the first to the last as influenced by the pixels in my images. They’re not the same people from when the series started, the mood changes, and you see all of that develop with the AI. It’s a very literal representation of seeing someone differently over time.”
